Mohammed Zubair, one of the people who helped start Alt News, was let out of Tihar jail on Wednesday evening after the Supreme Court gave him temporary bail earlier in the day.
In six cases filed against him across Uttar Pradesh for allegedly saying hateful things, the top court had given him temporary bail. In its order, the highest court said there was no reason to continue holding Zubair in jail. Two of the six cases have been filed in Hathras, and one each has been filed in the districts of Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Sitapur. One case in Chandauli, where a chargesheet has already been filed, has also been sent to Delhi’s Patiala House Court to be tried by the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
PTI quoted Zubair’s lawyer as saying that after the Supreme Court’s order, seven cases filed against Zubair in UP and Delhi were dropped by a court in Delhi.
Duty Magistrate Amardeep Kaur made the order after the lawyer for the accused filed bail bonds in all six cases filed in UP and one case filed in Delhi in which he had been given bail before.
The Supreme Court also sent six FIRs from Uttar Pradesh to the Special Cell of the Delhi Police to look into because all of the cases involved the same tweets that were allegedly offensive.
