There are only three days left until the ITR for Assessment Year 2022-23 is due.
From April 1, 2022, seniors who are 75 years old or older can ask not to have to file an Income Tax Return (ITR).
But they have to pay taxes just like everyone else. Section 194P was added to the Finance Act of 2021.
With this, a senior citizen can either fill out their own tax return or have their tax taken out and sent to the Income Tax Department.
In the last assessment year, 2021-22, about 6.63 ITRs were filed, some of which were from taxpayers who need their accounts to be audited.
For these taxpayers whose accounts are being audited, the last day to file an ITR is October 31, 2022.
If more than 5 crore tax returns are filed by July 31, the total number of ITRs for the year (audited and unaudited) will easily reach 6 crore.
In the Income-Tax Act of 1961, a new Section 139(8A) was added with the Finance Bill of 2022. (ITA).
This clause says that any person can file an updated tax return for the last two years.
